Positive/Negative

by: Nicole
I was wondering if for the final I'd be able to do a linocut? Or if this would translate well to that?

  1. Just a few things- In areas where you have a lot of black on black (moms pants, dads shirt, and the kid that is essentially all black) try separating them with some white areas. Doesn't have to be anything huge just a suggestion of form would really bring it home :)

    Lovin that llama, girl.

  2. I'm glad you made the lama defined by not crowding it with negative spaces. It really adds to the humor and composition of the piece.

  3. I love that the focus is on the llama now. The only thing you need to do is separate the Mom's pants and the Dad's shirt from the couch with a white outline. Awesome job.

  4. i think this is realllly nice and everything is really readable except for the far front foot on that llama. Maybe give it a white halo to separate it from the tree bg. That would be suuper easy to do with lino. As far as that goes i would just be concerned about textural marks happening in the upper right white corner because that whole corner will be empty. maybe a garland or something just to hold the block and keep everything flat black/white?

  5. The illustration looks great, but I would suggest that you put some shadows on the kids, toys, and llama just to illustrate the floor.

  6. this is so great! the mom's pants bother me however, the are so much a part of the couch in this sketch. some separation of the figures from where their sitting is in order

  7. The back of the llama is bothering me I feel like its blending into the tree a bit and I can't stop staring at it. Other then that I think it is a good funny piece.

  8. I told you this before but the expression on the dad's face is hilariousss. And on the llama's face - your expressions are awesome. I'll have to agree with everyone that the only fix that needs to be made is the distinction between the mom's pants, the couch, and the dads's shirt. The black is a little overwhelming. But, like, the kids and the toys and the little sparkly ornaments on the tree are all good details that work well together.
