  1. I am glad you got to use this piece because I thought the design layout was very appealing. Nice use of black and white composition I look forward to seeing it fully rendered

  2. What great movement you've created! =)
I really love the curved negative space framing the piece. I think there could be a little more going on in the bottom left corner, it just feels a little empty. Maybe moving the little book down would break up the space better?

  3. This is really sexy. I think it works really well. To balance it a bit more maybe you could do something with the whiteness of the bottom left corner or maybe just crop it a bit? All the echoed shapes in this piece make me really happy.

  4. I actually was rather fond of the white in the bottom left, it seems to balance the heavy black of the top right. It looks like the bird on the right is hitting the window? I might try to highlight that action by adding some marks to indicate impact, a couple thick, comic-style radiating lines or something? Up to you. Lovely composition.

  5. I think it really works well designed-wise! The balanced composition and proper amount of block the dark shape make the piece really strong.

  6. I love the large black shape and how you use the white around that to define the table or counter. All the individual shapes are interesting in themselves and give the piece a lot of movement. You used minimal line but the piece is still very readable. Great composition.

  7. The composition is amazing, the movement in the piece works well with the shapes and colors. The piece turned out really well

  8. I really like this the way it is. The only thing i can think of is that the left arm is a little unclear, so maybe experiment with the highlight on it.

  9. I'm having a hard time reading body of the person, but that may just be me. I really like how the background is encompassed in a circular shape of black, it's different and unique.

  10. im not quite sure whats going on here, do the salt and sugar have faces? they are a bit hard to distinguish but i think all your shapes are beautiful and the design works well

  11. I really like the shaped you are creating in this piece, they're really organic and dramatic, the text on the book and boxes might not be needed though

  12. I like the use of shapes and think that fulfills the negative/positive aspect of the project. It took me awhile but I was able to kind of grasp the prompt: she's using salt as opposed to sugar. I just wish that was more clear.

  13. Not to merely echo everyone else, but this is composed very well. Your use of simple shapes to block off the background from interfering with the foreground is well-executed. Also, I appreciate the subtlety of what is going awry here...

  14. this piece has a very strong composition and is very design oriented. Its very clean and i like the choices of where to put the lights and darks. The only thing that bothers me is im not really sure whats unexpected. Im not really sure whats going on. I can see that shes cooking but i dont see anything too out of the ordinary

  15. Ae-- this is beautiful! Couple quick changes (which echo other issues brought up here)...
1.) I would re-think your font/the typeface/the writing on the boxes and the book. Make sure its legible and nothing gets too close to the edges (it has to look VERY purposeful and well designed), to match the rest of the piece.
2.) i would split the difference between the two schools of thought on the white at the bottom left--- i'd leave it relatively bottom heavy to balance the black, BUT, i would also move the sugar box down just ever so slightly, so theres a little bit of space between the box and the rounded design element.
3.) you might not need the faces on the sugar or salt box--- just the words. it'll free up some more space for you and make the words less tight or confused.
4.) i might thicken the white line on the underside of her hair, just a smidge.

    thats it! lovely. *dana

  16. Great choice for this assignment. You did an excellent job with the composition and the positive and negative space. Well done, overall.

  17. I'm so glad you did this one! It's a perfect design for flat blacks, and you carried it out extremely well. I don't have all that much to say, other than perhaps to play with the line weight a bit.

  18. Great understanding of positive and negative shapes, and keeping everything very stylized and clear! I see everything that was charming about your original sketch in this image, which is fantastic. I don't know that I'm crazy about the way the top right corner is filled in as black - I thought it was charming how this piece did not fit into a rectangle. Maybe shave it down to a smooth curve to keep the shape consistent?
