The Dalai Lama and Obama met at the White House and China was pissed.

I hate it I hate it. I had a really hard time sketching it. Charcoal is too stubby in my hand and I couldnt get a fine point. I tried using the pencils but they didn't do that smudgy thing very well/ at all.
I love the color palette and composition. It's little confusing, because I didn't recognize those people represent China, maybe symbols like Chinese flag can help, and more angrier face? Also it's confusing what Obama and Dalai Lama is doing. (Maybe include White House? I don't know;) I love the expression of Obama and Dalai Lama! :D

I think you should make it clear that it is China looming over them. A paper with less texture would have probably made things easier.

ReplyDeletei agree with the comments above, the chinese need to scream chinese. and i mean, if its a political cartoon, you're allowed to just write the word china on it aren't you???
I definitely like the idea, of China as this big black thing that looms over them, but gonna have to agree with everyone as well. They kind of just look like random big suits at the moment. I like that you brought white into it, it looks a lot better than just charcoal and the orange paper together. The expression on the Dalai Lama's face is pretty funny - they've both got these kinda goofy smiles that I don't know if you intended, but actually work to kind of balance the seriousness and ridiculousness of the whole story.
ReplyDeleteYea, this is working pretty well dude. Don't be so hard on yourself. You just need to push the Chinese aspect of this a little more. Cause they don't read as china.

Rives or Arches are really good papers for charcoal..they can take a lot of abuse so you can continue to work back into them, and it won't become as smudgy. You could also start using vine or something while everything's still really general, and then use charcoal pencils wherever you need a finer line.
