Valentine's Day Card!

My plan is to do a really clean-cut (tee hee puns) pride graphic illustration with collage/cut paper. yay inspiration from in-class demos!

So my idea is to cut out the image [a tessellation of the same image but the last pair is holding hands] and have a rainbow collage in the background like so:

voila!

Or should the backing be flat black for everyone and have the couple at the end be rainbowed?

Anyway, Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

  1. I like the colours achieved in the first idea.

  2. Yea I think I agree with Marissa. I like your first idea best. I think the flat black with a rainbow couple might make being gay seem "other". Both seem effective though!

  3. I think you can get away with either idea. It looks like you've already started quite a bit of work trying to achieve the rainbow colors, so I assume you might stick with the first idea. I say go for it!

  4. I think the colors work very well making the card pop, but I'd be careful with the concept. To me, the card reads more as a "coming out card" or "it gets better" card rather than a Valentine. Just because the rainbow makes everyone gay, but the last two are subtly showing it.

I do love the idea of a gay Valentine Card though, so rock it.

  5. I agree with Ryan about the card reading more as a "coming out card" than a Valentine. The simple human shapes along with the rainbow in the background do make it pop!

  6. I agree the first colors are going to look really great. Simple design but very effective!

  7. I think you can continue using the rainbow colors. If you use black and rainbow for the couple, the message will be different.. so it depends on you and your original thoughts for it :) Good luck!

  8. I really like your first idea of doing dull people and then the brighter couple. I'm not completely sure if I'm sold on the black because it's so intense, and the rainbow is equally intense. But I agree, you should rock those rainbow couples!

  9. As design, I think this is very strong. You've chosen the colors well and seem to be making very clean, precise cuts.

I think one reason this comes across as more of a "coming out" card is a combination of the fact that only one couple is holding hands and all the default Male Restroom silhouette. I am by no means suggesting that there needs to be some specific detail designating some as female (I'm generally an advocate of the opposite) or that they ALL need to be holding hands, but the two things together lead to some confusion.

  10. The design for the card is great, clean cut like you said,I do agree with Ryan though about the colors making it seem like a coming out card, if you want it to be specifically that however if you want it to be more of a valentines day card maybe think of doing a gradient of one color like a red that fades to white. Its awesome though.

  11. The rainbow is well done but it screams gay pride! not Happy Valentine's day. I love the idea of gay Valentine's day cards, it's genius but I think that you could do something more interesting with that idea. This would make a really well designed poster.
