BenC: Valentine's Sketches

Thinking about love while trying to avoid cliches, I thought of love as a search. I came up with two versions that expressed roughly the same idea.

Final compositions will be traced onto watercolor paper and painted with acrylic ink.

  1. I think the first one conveys your idea the best.

  2. I also think the maze concept is most effective.

On a side note, and I may be the only one to see this, but the cluster of boats in the second image looks a little like florida foreshortened, and the that gives card a very different meaning for me! Haha

  3. I agree with Trace on the Florida input.

I can't decide which one I enjoy more though.

The 1st one is a bit more direct, but I feel like with the island you can have more fun adding small details. It also gives a stronger "You're 1 in a million" feel.

  4. I def think your concept in the first sketch works best, plus compositionally your second piece isn't as strong. Is all of this going to be in black & white with the purple? Or will you be using any other color?

  5. I go for the first sketch, because the play in perspective definitely draws my eyes to it.

  6. I think the maze works the best out of the two. And keeping the colors simple like this is really effective.

  7. I agree with what was said previously about the first one being stronger. The perspective is interesting and eye catching, and that is a major plus. The person in the very front looks a little squat, and I'm not sure if that was intentional (he could be Hobbit sized)?

But if you have your heart set on the second I would spread the boats out. You're reaching for a crowd, but they look a little too clustered and orderly.

  8. The maze conveys the topic better. Consider how the pink light falls on its surroundings.

  9. I planed on using greyscale for the majority of the image with violet/red tones in the right spots.

  10. I think both successfully convey your message. The boat idea is cuter to me because I imagine him continuing into the mod bumping against people's boats trying to get through to his love. The maze doesn't feel as warm to me. The composition is nice but kind of intimidating. Like I wouldn't want to look for love there.

It'd be cool to see you rework the boat composition and include more liveliness to the water.
