Research Day

For my final I initially was going to make a zine about Hampden and illustrate all of the cute little stores/ restaurants that are in it, on the research day I went and looked around and sketched a few things and had lunch at Golden West CafĂ©...  When I came home I started to make a layout for my zine and started to figure out where I would place things... during this brainstorm, I decided that I didn't really feel passionate enough about Hampden and I wanted to capture Baltimore's essence and quirkiness in a more genuine way. So instead of making an illustrated zine just about Hampden I am going to make a zine or small book about the weird fashion of the people of Baltimore.  I want to go to different neighborhoods/areas and whenever I see someone with a really crazy or weirdly cool outfit I will take a picture with my phone and then illustrate it.  The book will be separated by chapters by the place that I spotted them at, for example, bolton hill/mt. vernon/ fed hill/station north etc. I hope to have at least 50 illustrations in my book.

here is a runner I spotted in an all yellow outfit in the Inner Harbor ..  he also had a son with an all neon orange outfit

Charm City Circulator

My plan for the final is to illustrate the circulator to emphasize the diversity in Baltimore. Everyone takes the circulator. I want to make a book of portraits of travelers. So for my research day I rode the circulator and took some photos on my cell phone. The quality sucks and everyone eventually realized what I was taking pictures so it got a little weird haha. I think a good approach would be to take two or three pictures every time I ride the circulator so that I end up with a large number of portraits and people won't catch on as easily to my secret photo-snapping.

The last guy creeps me out.

My Aquarium trip

Unfortunately when I went to the aquarium it was pretty late so I didn't get to go to any of the special events I had wanted to go to and a lot of the people were already gone.  I hope to go again and ask around what the peoples favorite exhibits/animals are and base whatever I draw on that.  I was originally thinking of doing a poster series geared toward children, but now I'm thinking of doing postcards of some of the favorite animals instead.

There are three daily events that I hope to go to next time I go.  A live feeding of one of the tanks were a diver is actually interacting with the viewers outside the tank, one of the 4D movies they play daily, and possibly to an event where younger kids can get really close to some of the animals and learn about them.

Here are some of my favorite pictures from my trip.

Fell's Point Trip

Last Wednesday, I went to Fell's Point Historical district for my research project,
took some pictures that are mainly the rowhouses :

Some of them have beautiful color combinations,

My choices of the illustrated products are either postcards that consist of different or a book / journal of my time spent in Fell's point, how the places look like, incidents, interviews, my favorite spots, things that will make the piece more "intimate" and "special".

Trip to Edgar Allan Poe's grave

Today I went to Edgar Allen Poe's gravesite since I want to make a character based off this location. I took a lot of photos of graves and the surrounding area.
I did some sketches while I was there. One of the memorial + a sketch of a potential character design.

Next I'm thinking about walking down Charles St. and making sketches of characters based off of the churches in that area.
