Valentines Day card sketches

The first one:  is more so saying pizza is love. Sharing it with someone you love is very rare, if you're me at least.
The Second: I'm leaning more towards. I want to add doile around the word butts. I was going to use gouache and/or acrylic

  1. Glad you took the humorous approach to the assignment. I'm interested in the second one as well, but am curious as to how you're going to crop and showcase it. The idea of BUTTS being framed in doile is cool, but what goes in the bottom right?

  2. DEFINITELY the butts because of reasons. It looks like you enjoyed working with that one most, plus it's funny.

When you're doing thumbnails and final sketches you should think about keeping your drawings within a frame. I know it can be a pain, but it'll get you thinking about how things are fitting into your composition so you won't run into as many problems later.
For example, is this card going to be horizontal or vertical? If you're going to do this horizontally, I would crop it off where the guy's legs end. If you're doing this vertically, I would finish drawing the guy's legs, then center "BUTTS" above them. Plus, I would take a few seconds to take a reference picture for the girl's legs since they look kinda tangled here. :)

    I hope that helps!

  3. Very cute character! I like the "BUTTS" card as well. I also agree that most of my questions are about composition. How is it going to sit on the card exactly.

    Doily will be nice!

  4. The second one is great! Maybe incorporate the words into the composition in a different way so there wouldn't be so much empty space.

  5. (I take back anything I said about the "BUTTS". I think they said we weren't allowed to use any text in this? You might double check, since they emailed us the instructions. Either way, I think it could still work without it.)

  6. I like the second sketch better :) And I think it would be better if you put the male's body on the upper edge of the piece, since you seem to be focusing on the lower part of his body plus the girl embracing his legs. And ya, I don't think we are allowed to use texts.. Good luck!

  7. Butts all the way! Also, I don't think we're allowed to use text at all on the assignment. You should make her cheek totally pressed all up on the buttcheek, so much so that it makes her eye squint. If it were me, I would crop it at showing her head to the bottom of her elbow, because it looks like you're unsure of what to do with feet. Consider the space to the right of the drawing.

  8. I agree that the butts is pretty great! Hilarious
The only thing confusing me about it is where the girl is positioned on his leg. She kind of looks like she's on his knee, so it almost appears that she's hugging onto his leg.
So maybe give more of a sense of how she's being supported/ where his legs are.

  9. Butts for sure! I would just be careful with where the lettering goes because you don't want the piece to be too heavy on one side or the other, defiantly play around with the positioning of the text.

  10. Just get rid of the text in butts and frame your composition vertically like you have it and you should be good to go.

  11. The character design is great and different. I would just suggest finishing the guy's legs and taking away the text. I really like the doily idea because it's pairing the typical with an unexpected illustration. Maybe you could somehow cut it to follow the edge of the drawing? Or just incorporating it in a different way
