Editorial Sketches

These are my thumbnail sketches/initial ideas for the editorial project.

These are my two rough sketches, and final sketch idea. The final sketch has to do with the idea of "the game being rigged", which was said during the panel discussion.

Black and white editorial final sketch

The theme of my final sketch is about Susan Burton's project for helping women to find their way back to a normal life. This project has already helped more than 500 women reuniting with their family and a job to support themselves. Also, taking the quote from David Simon, 'Turning the lights on is what really making a change', I added the light switch on the sketch to create a warm homecoming feeling and indicate the 'changes' of that woman's life in the drawing.

Map Research

I ran down to Hampden with Soojin and checked out Atomic Comics first. It was really nice, they had a bunch of really good graphic novels. They also had a bunch of really cute trinkets and a lot of them were sweet themed. We checked out the odd unremarkable hipster-y thrift store and got lunch at Café Hon. The veggie burger was nice but it was ridiculously big. I hear their pastries are pretty good, I need to go back and check it out again.

We went to Ma Petite Shoe and they had some really fancy chocolate. I got a piece (for research purposes, of course) and it’s very nice. I stopped by Choux because it caught my eye while we left Ma Petite Shoe and oh my goodness it is such a nice little café. They had delicious homemade pumpkin spice syrup and some fancy cake-slice-shaped pieces of quiche. The lady behind the counter is a sweetie and the sweets are great.
We checked out the Charmery and they had excellent salted caramel ice cream. Their main selling points are the magical temperature-color-changing spoons and their old bay caramel ice cream. I wasn’t brave enough to taste test that flavor but I’m sure it’s delicious? I got one of those penis lollipops from Sugar next. It’s not too remarkable as far as flavor goes but the novelty of it is fun enough. We took the light rail to the inner harbor and ran around itssugar. They have a wonderful candy selection but they carry some weird stuff like mac n cheese lip balm and candy underwear and glittery mini-flasks. The best thing about the store is the little gelato place to the far right. Their violet gelato tastes like princesses and diabetes, it’s fantastic.

Constitution Day Illustration

I briefly heard of the massive hunger strike in California on the news before Constitution Day. It strikes me as interesting and awful so I decided to do my piece on the issue.

Black and White Editorial Assignment

Susan Burton talked about how she first started 5 homes for 700 women. 200 children were reunited with their parents. I decided to research more about their relationships. I found out that 2.7 children under the age of 18 have one or more parents in the incarceration system. These parents are usually imprisoned for minor drug related charges. These children are more likely to experience poverty, unstable housing, and psychological and social problems. 14,000 or more children annually enter the foster care system. Many enter juvenile detentions or prison themselves. Communication is scarce between children and parents, including visitations. Children of the former imprisoned parents are affected as well. Parents with drug felonies have their benefits from federal social welfare programs taken away. The criminal justice reform affects children more than the public thinks, including myself. I wanted to show that even though only the parent is incarcerated, the child is affected just as much.

Black and White Editorial Final Sketch

This is the final sketch for my Black&White Editorial project. I was very impressed when Susan Burton shared her life stories and what she is currently doing. Giving resources and support to just-released female offenders are not an easy task. It would be almost impossible for many of those women to start a new life without Susan's help. Her story was truly inspiring and admirable. So, I wanted to depict her experience and the role she is taking in the society. In the sketch, there is a conveyor belt keeps moving forward and it is pushing all the just-released people forward and forward. In the end, they would just fall off from the conveyor belt, which symbolizes how there would be no help for them from the society. However, Susan is holding a big nest with houses inside, giving those depressed people a gentle smile. She is providing them home, protection and helping them by providing opportunities.

"Black and White Editorial" Final Sketch

This is my final sketch for the Constitution Day editorial assignment. After researching the hunger strike further, I found out that while the UN considers 15+ days of solitary confinement to be tortue, California state prisons have held some prisoners in solitary confinement for 10-40+ years, which I wanted to focus on. I may or may not change the amount/size of tally marks along the walls based on how it reads when the size is reduced in a photocopy.
