With the way that you have her hair wrapping around the piece, it could really help to make her a lovely lady "wrapping" him in her love.
Giving the gentlemen a more sensitive expression such as a little embarrassed blush or a look of mild surprise could help turn this into something a little less sexual.
But there's are little things here and there that can make this piece something so touching, intimate, but not overly so.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7790044800311554835.post-92109861830474255102014-02-12T22:00:42.175-05:002014-02-12T22:00:42.175-05:00I like that you show a woman and a man in complete...I like that you show a woman and a man in complete side. it looks simple. but I wish there is more information in illustration like background. and if there is more contrast on her hair, it would be nicer.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7790044800311554835.post-7611523627408463862014-02-12T20:20:48.165-05:002014-02-12T20:20:48.165-05:00alex-- a good lesson here: if you're gonna go ...alex-- a good lesson here: if you're gonna go simple, you have to nail every element of the piece… or it complicates it. I agree with everyone else in terms of the actual drawing of the figures. They seem just slightly off reality (but like the sketch version of the guy with the giant hair, they're not SO far off reality that we know for certain its purposeful). You can stylize, but you need to be consistent. His expression IS weird.

I think as a Valentine, it would be more successful if it was slightly less sexual. I like the sweetness of a kiss on the cheek. Maybe they need a hint of clothing?

Again, think of this as a cover to a card with no punchline inside.

in terms of rendering- the limited palette is great, but the execution is muddy. I think doing something stylistically more like Mucha and really pushing off of those swirling tresses and interesting negative space between them-- clean and linear with flat, clean color would've helped. Maybe having him look at the woman or close his eyes would be better. Also, I'm confused by the man's hair at the top but I weirdly like it. It goes with your interesting linework. I think they'd benefit from being drawn in a three quarter view next time to give them more dimensions which will make it harder to make them look flat.

Also slow down next time. Take your time. From the looks of your lines being all jagged you can tell that you were putting them down fast in a sketchier manner. It is very simple yet I can sense her love towards man. However, I think you should fix the eye angle of the man. He seems like he is looking at something behind the woman, not the woman. I feel that this piece could be stronger too if you had the girl at a profile view and turned the guy to more of a three quarter view or turned him to the front, that way it would be easier to tell what his expression is and what reaction I should be getting to this piece.
