Ottoman Turkey: Positive / Negative

  1. I like the positive/negative affect and how you used the shadows to convey that. I just wish that this had more of the "Thats not what I expected!" aspect to it, because it seems more like a fantasy novel graphic. Otherwise good work!

  2. I really like the figure of the horse with only few black shapes. But I don't quite get rider's identity... the body seems like a human but the face looks like a chicken or some kinds of bird. I wish that the face of the rider will be more clear.

  3. I agree with Deming, I'm not really sure what's not expected? I do really like the bold black to white to black of the sky, mountain, and land. The black of the horse's legs against the white mountains looks AWESOME.

  4. The horse and rider were rendered very well, so maybe you could incorporate some of that into the background. Also, as others had mentioned, what exactly is unexpected here?

  5. The horse reads nicely and you did an excellent job translating it to high contrast. I have some problems with the anatomy and face of the rider, his arm looks a little disjointed and you lose clarity in the face. Try to simplify your image so it works better in black and white.

  6. The horse is awesome, but the riders identity is somewhat lost and im not sure what is so unexpected in this piece. I like the harsh contrast between the characters and the background.

  7. I think the horizontal strip of white works really well to define the landscape as well as making the horse and rider pop out. I think it works well for the prompt, I've never seen a turkey riding a horse. I also enjoy the contrast between the simple background and the detail in the subject. The turkeys face is great, i love the detail.

maybe a moon or stars or something of interest in the sky?

  8. Its really dynamic! The body shape of horse really nicely handled. Is that mountain in the background? I think you really balance the amount of black and white shapes properly. But I wish the figure of the man is clearer.

  9. i like your shapes, but i think some texture in the background would be nice, and give it some depth. i agree that its a bit strayed from the prompt.

  10. I think the positive and negative shapes are handled nicely, the one thing I have a problem with is the horse's legs. The back one that is mostly black: his hoof/ankle wouldn't be so drastically angled compared to the rest of the leg. The front white leg: the bottom part of it looks a bit thick compared to the other legs on the horse.

  11. I really like the shapes you used on the horse and the rider. the background almost seems a little simplified compared to the rest of it. Also, the riders face is a little indefinate I get that it's an animals face, but it's unclear what kind of animal or if the type of animal holds any significance.

  12. The horse is really well done. I wish the mountains, sky and background were as good as that. I'd also think this can be better pushed to fulfill the prompt.

  13. Maybe makes the turkey guy more of a turkey and make the sword brighter despite the fact that its behind him

  14. this is a pretty powerful image, but im not sure that it comunicates very well. I agree with the comment that it looks more like an illustration in a fantasy book with a weird creature riding a horse. A background could help this piece but i think your lights and darks are working well together as it is

  15. I think the figure just needs to read clearer. It gets really lost in the black behind it. I think if you simplify it more like you did with the horse it would read clearer. Nice image. I thought it was funny.

  16. This is awesome. It is the fiercest turkey I have ever seen.

The values in it are great, and I think you could show them off a bit more by using less detail. A really stark black and white might make it even fiercer.

  17. Andrew-- its really nicely rendered. Thanks for getting on this too. I would only make a few adjustments:

1.) the turkey's face is really great when you get up close. is there a way to lighten it up a little more, so that we get more "pay off" before we get right up on it? Play with the Unexpected-- Turkeys are maybe not the most... frightening. So thats good- i just want to know that turkey is a turkey a little sooner.

2.) I would darken/thicken some of the horse "outline" lines.. particularly under the horse's neck. look at it again objectively and tweak some of those lines.

3.) i like the contrast of the simple background against the subjects. BUT, i might shift some of the rise and falls of the mountains so they arent exactly the same as the horse and rider (look at the mountain as it goes into the tail and out of the ear--- its the same line--- can the mountain go into the lower leg and out of the forehead, for example-- not saying do those exactly, but the idea).

    lovely!

  18. Great use of positive and negative shapes overall, but I did have a hard time reading the turkey at first!
